Tom Raye was born in Texas. He first started painting in an art studio in the attic of his North Dallas home, dabbling in wood carvings, painting abstract pieces, historic buildings and landscapes, all the while making a “real’ living as a bank consultant for several lenders.
In 1985, he and his wife Dee Starr Raye moved to North Atlanta where he delved deeper into wood carvings and added major metal sculpting and book writing to his repertoire. His metal sculpting range from 2 feet to a 500 lb piece that stands in the prestigious law offices of Kimberly Clark in Washington, DC, to an even larger ton and a half piece, commissioned by a private collector in Jacksonville , FL.
In 1998 Tom moved to Sky Valley, Georgia where he retired from the business world in 2009. Tom continued to write books, including five novels he hopes to have published. Tom returned to his passions of painting and after ten years he again picked up his paint brush and started painting some of the local historic buildings and old barns from the area, as well as carving his colorful eclectic wooden snakes.
Venturing into yet another art media Tom recently completed an Eckman Method Paper sculpture. A truly spectacular work which is on display at the Timpson Creek Gallery just west of Clayton, GA. A sampling of some of his recent paintings can be seen at the "van Arkels Art gallery in Hiawassee, GA and Calderone Gallery in Sky Valley, GA as well as the “Gallery of Gems” in Franklin, NC.
Tom estimates he has sold hundreds of pieces of his various works to collectors across the United States.
Over the years Tom has accepted commissions to do custom pieces for various collectors, however, he prefers the freedom to strike out in a new direction on any given day that a new challenge or inspiration appears.
Most all paintings are available in Giclee upon request.
